Theatre Seminar "Ito-Juku" vol.05 All the Square’s a Theatre, and the Theatre a Square.

Theatre Workshop has consistently hosted theatre seminars featuring invited guests.

This year, we are launching a new seminar series, "Ito-Juku," led by our representative, Masaji Ito.

With 50 years of experience in theatre architecture research and extensive involvement in theatre and performance spaces, Masaji Ito will lead each session, focusing on specific themes.

Building on research findings and practical insights, participants will engage in discussions to develop a new theatre model for the 2030s.

Masaji Ito, Representative Director Message

If asked, "What is theatre?" I would answer, "Where there are performers and an audience, that place becomes a theatre."

Facilities designed for theatrical or musical performances are not the only places where performances can take place—thus, they are not the only theatres.
Street performances and live music can turn streets into theatres and station squares into concert halls. Any space has the potential to become a theatre.

According to the Japanese Theatre Law, theatre is the new square.
Then let us consider: What if the square is the new theatre?
Seen this way, theatre gains even greater power to transform both people’s lives and the city itself.

The fifth installment is " All the Square’s a Theatre, and the Theatre a Square "
Through examples of plazas and squares transformed into theatres, we will explore the very essence of theatre.
