Theatre Workshop has consistently hosted theatre seminars featuring invited guests.
This year, we are launching a new seminar series, "Ito-Juku," led by our representative, Masaji Ito.
With 50 years of experience in theatre architecture research and extensive involvement in theatre and performance spaces, Masaji Ito will lead each session, focusing on specific themes.
Building on research findings and practical insights, participants will engage in discussions to develop a new theatre model for the 2030s.
Masaji Ito, Representative Director Message
Vol. 03 will be titled "The Concept of Theatrical Space."
What phrase would you use to describe the entire space, including the stage and the seating? In fact, there is no clear term for this concept in architectural terminology.
Therefore, we have decided to call it "Geki-Kukan," meaning theatrical space.
This time, we will explore the possibilities of a new theatre by considering the "Geki-Kukan" as the minimum unit of theatre.
The third session of "Ito-Juku" will focus on a discussion of theatrical space.
Traditional theatres separated the stage and the audience with a proscenium arch.
However, the new theatre movement of the 20th century broke down the "fourth wall," bringing the acting space into the audience. This shift was also a return to the theatres of the Greek and Shakespearean eras.
The division between stage and audience no longer makes sense. A new trend has emerged and taken root—one that emphasizes the sense of unity between the stage and the audience, highlighting the greatest attraction of live entertainment. Adaptable theatres, capable of transforming the relationship between stage and audience in various ways, have also emerged.
Let us reflect on these changes in theatrical spaces and explore together where the appeal of these spaces lies!
