Theatre Seminar: “Before the Curtain Rises” Vol. 03

The theatre seminar series “Before the Curtain Rises: Exploring the Theatre from Behind the Scenes of Creation” Vol. 03 will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2026, at P.O. Minami-Aoyama Hall (Minato Ward, Tokyo), hosted by Miho Nakai and Kazuhisa Tobe.

We are pleased to announce that Kayoko Nakura,aWestern-style dancer and choreographer, will beour guestfor Vol. 03 .

Ms. Nakura, who has spent many years choreographing and instructing for various productions—including Takarazuka Revue and musicals—and has nurtured numerous performers, is a leading choreographer in the Japanese performing arts scene.Drawing on Ms. Nakura’s experience—gained through her work as a dancer and choreographer at numerous theatres both in Japan and abroad, from the heyday of Japanese theatre to the present—we will explore how the unique conditions of each theatre—such as its scale, structure, and proximity to the audience—influence choreography and direction, and what synergistic effects they produce.

He will analyze theatres from a choreographer’s unique perspective and reflect on the role and future of the theatre as a place where artistic expression and the audience meet.

This perspective is sure to offer new insights not only to theatre professionals and stage producers, but also to theatre enthusiasts and those involved in theatre architecture and urban development.
